Halloween Driving Tricks to Keep Everyone Safe
October 24, 2025 | Safety | By Tri-County International Trucks
To help everyone bring home treats — not tragedies — follow these tips for a safe Halloween:
- Focus on your driving. A single distraction could lead to a tragedy.
- Stay well below the posted speed limit.
- Pay attention to what’s happening on sidewalks and roadways. Watch for children darting across streets, especially between parked cars.
- Be extra alert when pulling in and out of driveways.
- Do not assume children can see you or are paying attention. You need to take that responsibility.
- Drivers should also check that all lights on their vehicle are working properly.
- Do not pass other vehicles that have stopped in the roadway. They may be dropping off children.
- If you’re driving a group of children but staying in the running vehicle at the curb, turn on your hazard lights to alert other motorists.
- If you’re driving to a Halloween party, put your mask on after you park the car.
Parents can help motorists, too:
- Make sure drivers can see the children. Give them flashlights and glow sticks, and dress kids in bright, reflective clothing or use reflective tape on their costumes.
- Use makeup rather than masks, so children have a clear, unobstructed view of their surroundings.
- Be sure children know how to cross a street — look left, right, and left again before crossing.
- Instruct children to stay on sidewalks and to cross only at corners or crosswalks.
- Accompany your children as they trick-or-treat.
Safely Getting In or Out of a Commercial Motor Vehicle
Now is a good time to remind drivers to follow the Three-Point Rule when getting in and out of their trucks. During the winter months, footing conditions are often compromised, and the chance of slipping or falling increases.
The Three-Point Rule simply means keeping three of your four contact points (hands and feet) secured at all times to prevent slips and falls.
For example, when exiting a truck:
- Keep one hand on the cab handle,
- One hand on the interior door handle, and
- One foot on a step while the other foot is in transition.
By doing this, you always maintain three points of contact.

10 Tips for Driving Safely in Work Zones:
• EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED! (Normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may change, and workers may be present on or near the road.)
• SLOW DOWN! (Speeding is one of the leading causes of work zone crashes.)
• DON'T TAILGATE! KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE FROM THE VEHICLE AHEAD. (The most common crash in a highway work zone is a rear-end collision. Avoid tailgating.)
• KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE FROM CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AND EQUIPMENT.
• PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIGNS! (Warning signs help drivers navigate safely through the work zone. Follow posted signs until you see the one indicating you have exited the work zone.)
• OBEY ROAD CREW FLAGGERS! (Flaggers have the same authority as regulatory signs, and failure to obey their instructions can result in a citation.)
• STAY ALERT AND MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS! (Dedicate your full attention to the roadway and avoid using cell phones or adjusting the radio while driving in a work zone.)
• KEEP UP WITH THE TRAFFIC FLOW. (Merge as soon as possible and avoid last-minute lane changes near closures.)
• SCHEDULE ENOUGH TIME TO DRIVE SAFELY AND CHECK TRAFFIC INFORMATION. (Expect delays and leave early to arrive on time. Check the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse for nationwide work zone updates.)
• BE PATIENT AND STAY CALM. (Work zones are there to improve roads, making future travel safer and more efficient.)
FMCSA Crash Preventability Program
January 15, 2025 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
Motor carriers and drivers can challenge the preventability of certain crashes through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Crash Preventability Determination Program (CPDP). Approved non-preventable DOT-recordable crashes can be removed from your CSA scoring, offering significant benefits.
How the Program Works:
FMCSA’s CPDP reviews 21 specific crash types and updates information in the Agency’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) to identify crashes as "Not Preventable." If you were involved in an eligible crash, you can submit a Request for Data Review (RDR) through the Agency’s DataQs system. This submission must include:
- The required police accident report
- Supporting documents, photos, or videos
Once the FMCSA determines a crash is "Not Preventable":
- Crash Indicator BASIC Adjustment: The crash is removed from the calculation of the Crash Indicator Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Category (BASIC) in the SMS.
- Visibility of Determinations: Although removed from scoring, "Not Preventable" crashes will still be listed on the FMCSA website, with the determination noted.
- Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) Updates: A note is added to the PSP indicating the crash was not preventable, improving employment prospects for drivers with these incidents in their history.
Benefits of a Non-Preventable Determination:
If a crash is deemed "Not Preventable," the FMCSA will:
- Improve Carrier Scores: Remove the crash from the carrier’s "Crash Indicator" score in the CSA system, reducing the likelihood of targeted enforcement actions.
- Enhance Driver Employability: Add a note in the PSP indicating the crash was "Not Preventable," reducing the risk that the driver will be overlooked for employment due to their crash history.
Communicating with Other Drivers and Pedestrians While Driving
January 7, 2025 | Events | By Tri-County International Trucks
The following communication devices are part of your “execution arsenal”:
- Turn signals should be used to let other drivers know that you are turning, changing lanes, pulling out of a parking space, or pulling out from the curb. You should signal at least four seconds before you plan to take action.
- Emergency signals should be used to warn other drivers that you are experiencing vehicle trouble or when you must park on the shoulder of the roadway due to an emergency. This serves as a warning to other drivers to give you more space.
- The horn should be tapped lightly when trying to gain the attention of another driver or pedestrian. It should not be used to vent frustration at other drivers’ actions.
- Headlights: Many new trucks have daytime running lights that turn on automatically, helping other drivers see you. You can flash your lights at oncoming traffic to warn them of dangers ahead, such as accidents or obstructions in the roadway
Turn Signals
Use your turn signals first to indicate your intent to change lanes. Next, visually scan for adjacent traffic and road hazards, and then execute a safe lane change. By signaling your intentions well in advance, you will be in a safer position to communicate with surrounding drivers and will be able to safely execute the desired driving maneuver. A good safety practice is to signal at least four seconds prior to making a turning maneuver.
Did You Know? A recent study reported that there are approximately 630,000 lane-change crashes annually, including both large trucks and passenger vehicles.
While you certainly wouldn't know it from watching the majority of drivers, using a turn signal to indicate a lane change is generally the law.
Emergency Signals (4 Ways)
FMCSA 392.22 – Emergency signals; stopped commercial motor vehicles:
Whenever a commercial motor vehicle is stopped on the traveled portion of a highway or the shoulder of a highway for any cause other than necessary traffic stops, the driver of the stopped commercial motor vehicle must immediately activate the vehicular hazard warning signal flashers and continue flashing them until the driver has placed the warning devices required by CFR 395.22. The flashing signals should be used while the warning devices are being picked up for storage before the commercial motor vehicle is moved. The flashing lights may be used at other times while the commercial motor vehicle is stopped, in addition to, but not in place of, the warning devices required by this section.
Horn
The horn on a commercial motor vehicle is a safety device that can sometimes be the only item preventing an accident by sounding an alarm and communicating your presence to another vehicle. However, we all know of drivers who have abused the use of the horn, potentially causing an accident by startling another motorist. There have been documented instances of road rage that started with the misuse of a horn. The sounding of a horn is one of the few actions a driver can take that makes an intrusion into the driving compartment of another vehicle. Horns on commercial vehicles vary in size, from small electric (city horns) to large, exterior-mounted chrome-trumpeted air horns. Novelty horns are also popular and can play familiar tunes, such as college football fight songs.
So, what does the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) say about a horn?
The answer is found in CFR §393.81:
Every bus, truck, truck-tractor, and every driven motor vehicle in driveaway-towaway operations shall be equipped with a horn and actuating elements, which shall be in such condition as to give an adequate and reliable warning signal.
§393.81 DOT Interpretations
Question 1: Do the FMCSRs specify what type of horn is to be used on a CMV?
Guidance: No.
Question 2: Are there established criteria in the FMCSRs to determine the minimum sound level of horns on CMVs?
Guidance: No.
Can I drive my commercial motor vehicle if the horn is not operational?
Answer: No.
Answer: CFR §392.7
Equipment, Inspection and Use.
No commercial motor vehicle shall be driven unless the driver is satisfied that the following parts and accessories are in good working order, nor shall any driver fail to use or make use of such parts and accessories when and as needed:
- Service brakes, including trailer brake control
- Parking (hand) brake
- Steering mechanism
- Lighting devices and reflectors
- Tires
- Horn
- Windshield wiper or wipers
- Rear-vision mirror or mirrors
- Coupling devices
Headlights
Many companies now have their trucks programmed to keep the low beam headlights on whenever the engine is running. Many states also have laws requiring headlights to be on whenever the windshield wipers are in use. Both of these are good safety practices.
Are your headlights on your truck "fogged" or dirty?
Do you ensure that your headlights, turn signals, and brake lights are clean during your pre- and post-trip inspections?
According to the National Institute for Traffic and Highway Safety, the number one cause of severe nighttime accidents and reduced driving safety is dim, cloudy, or improperly lit
headlights. If a headlight has ineffective or diminished light output, your nighttime driving safety is greatly at risk. A study by the University of Iowa found that a 20-50% reduction in headlight output leads to a 90% increase in the likelihood of an accident. This is a very unnecessary risk, as it is easy to either clean, replace, or fix these headlights.
Dim it!
Is flashing high beams at cars illegal?
Someone told me that flashing your headlights at a vehicle in front of you, particularly if it is going slow in the fast lane, is a citable offense. Is this true?
Yes, in some states, that is true.
The main concern with flashing headlights at an oncoming motorist is that they may be temporarily blinded, which could create blind spots for other motorists while operating their vehicles, thus creating an obviously hazardous situation.
Proper Steps to Take in Preparing for Winter Driving Conditions
December 17, 2024 | Safety | By Tri-County International Trucks
Step 1: Prepare Your Truck for Winter Driving
Tires are the most important factor in maintaining control of your vehicle in snowy and icy conditions. Traction tires on the drive axle(s) with adequate tread depth provide the best control. The tread depth and condition of the steer axle tires are also crucial for maintaining control of steering. If you are operating in areas with chain laws, ensure your chains are in good condition and ready to be installed if necessary. Additionally, make sure that all mirrors and glass on the truck are clean for optimal visibility.
Step 2: Turn Your Lights On
Turn on your lights to improve your visibility to other motorists.
Step 3: Avoid Using Cruise Control
Do not use cruise control on snowy or icy roads.
Step 4: Be Cautious on Bridges, Overpasses, and Infrequently Traveled Roads
Exercise extra caution on bridges, overpasses, and infrequently traveled roads, as these areas freeze first. Even if the temperature is above freezing, you may encounter ice on shaded areas or exposed roadways, such as bridges.
Step 5: Don’t “Pump” the Brakes
If your truck is equipped with ABS brakes, do not "pump" the brakes. Let the system function as designed.
Step 6: Drive Slowly
Driving too quickly is a leading cause of winter accidents. Just because you are driving a large truck with a heavy load doesn't make you invincible. Be sure to drive slowly and cautiously on snow- and ice-covered roads.
Step 7: Stay Alert
Maneuvering is more challenging in snowy conditions. Anticipate your next move, giving yourself plenty of room for turns and stops.
Step 8: Don’t Tailgate
Tailgating is dangerous under normal conditions, but it is especially hazardous in winter weather. Stopping takes longer on snow and ice compared to dry pavement. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you. A good rule of thumb is to maintain four vehicle lengths for every 10 mph you are driving.
Step 9: Brake Before Making Turns
It is difficult to steer while applying the brakes in snowy conditions. Smoothly apply the brakes to reduce speed before entering a turn. Once you have rounded the corner, you can accelerate again.
Step 10: Drive Smoothly
Snowy and icy roads are much less forgiving than dry pavement. Avoid abrupt turns or stops, as they can cause your vehicle to lose control and skid.
Step 11: Be Familiar with Your Vehicle
It’s essential to understand your vehicle's handling characteristics, especially when driving on snow or ice. Be aware of your truck’s load and weight. As the load decreases, the vehicle’s handling on snow and ice will change.
Step 12: Learn How to Control Skids
While it’s best to practice skid control in a driving school or on a closed course, it’s also helpful to know how to react if you experience a skid under real-world conditions. When skidding, counteract your natural instincts by turning into the skid and accelerating gently. Taking your foot off the brakes and gently accelerating during a skid helps transfer weight from the front to the rear, often allowing you to regain control.

Overhead Damage: How Not to Make a Convertible Out of Your Truck or Trailer!
November 27, 2024 | Safety | By Tri-County International Trucks
Here are some tips for drivers to prevent this type of damage:
- When you call your customer for directions to their facility, keep in mind that the person giving you directions drives there every day in a car. They may not realize that the bridges and overpasses you will encounter might not be high enough for your truck. Specifically ask if the directions they provided are on a truck route and if there are any low clearances. Regardless of the information you receive, proceed with caution, as you are the one responsible for any damage caused.
- Overhead clearances are often posted in advance of most underpasses and tunnels, but be aware that new asphalt may have been laid on the road, reducing clearance by a couple of inches. Stay alert for road construction near underpasses, bridges, and tunnels.
- Just because other trucks are passing through doesn't mean your truck will fit under the bridge, tunnel, etc.
- If a marked or unmarked overpass looks low, slow down immediately, turn on your four-way flashers, and carefully approach the overpass. Stop and check your actual clearance.
- Many bridges and overpasses are not perfectly straight; the sides are often lower than the center. If possible, cross under in the inside lane.
- If you can, check the road elevation on the other side of the bridge. A sharp incline or decline could cause trouble. You may fit under the bridge while entering, but as you exit, the body or trailer could be pushed up into the bridge due to the change in road elevation.
- In winter, snow and ice on the roadway can reduce the clearance enough to cause damage.
- If you find you cannot proceed through a low overhead and traffic is congested around you, it’s better to call the police for assistance in backing out of the situation. Backing against traffic to maneuver could cause an accident.
Preparing for the Cold Weather
October 3, 2024 | Safety | By Tri-County International Trucks
Fuel Additive Use during Cold Weather Conditions
To prevent fuel jelling, additives should be added whenever the ambient temperature falls below 32°F. Power Service and Penray are two popular manufacturers of fuel additives, each offering a range of products available through Navistar and Idealease locations.
Power Service:
- The "Red Bottle," known as Power Service 911, should be used only when the fuel in a unit has already jelled.
- 911 is NOT to be used as a fuel additive that you would regularly put in the fuel tank to keep the fuel from jelling.
- Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement + Cetane "White Bottle" is to be added to the fuel at each fill when the ambient temperature is < 30 degrees F.
- This is the additive you should use on a regular basis during the winter months.
Penray:
Winter Than Emergency Diesel Fuel Supplement
- Dissolves already gelled fuel fast and reduces clogging of fuel filters. Prevents ice crystal build-up in fuel lines and filters by disbursing moisture.

National School Bus Safety Week is Oct. 21-25
September 24, 2024 | Safety | By Tri-County International Trucks
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging drivers to slow down and be aware of school buses in their communities. Although school buses are one of the safest modes of transportation, injuries and fatalities do occur outside of or near the buses. Most often, these tragedies happen because motorists have failed to slow down and obey the bus’s stop sign or follow local traffic laws.
Nationwide, passing a school bus when it is stopped is illegal and poses a deadly risk to bus riders and their caretakers. Drivers should always come to a complete stop when a school bus's stop-arm is extended and its red lights are flashing. From 2013 to 2022, there were 1.5 times more fatalities among pedestrians (169) than occupants of school buses (111) in school-bus-related crashes. A total of 111 school-age children (18 and younger) died in school-bus-related crashes during that period, whether as occupants of school buses or other vehicles, or while on foot or bike. Of these 111 deaths, 25 were children who were walking.
From 2000 to 2022, there were 55 fatalities in crashes involving a driver illegally passing a stopped school bus. Almost half of these fatalities (25) were pedestrians aged 18 years or younger. When a school bus’s red lights are flashing and the stop-arm is extended, drivers must slow down and come to a complete stop. This is not a suggestion — it’s the law. Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children, so motorists should begin to slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles. Motorists may only start moving again when the red flashing lights are turned off, the stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins to move. School bus riders and their caretakers are relying on drivers to follow the law to keep them safe.
Respect the "Danger Zone"
The area around a school bus where children are at the highest risk is known as the “Danger Zone.” Specifically, this includes any area around the bus where the driver may not be able to see a child, making it particularly hazardous. The Danger Zone encompasses:
- 10 feet in front of the bus, where the driver may be too high up to see a child.
- 10 feet on either side of the bus, where a child may be in the driver’s blind spots.
- Behind the school bus.

International S13 Integrated Powertrain Hits the Road for Interactive Training Tour
July 24, 2024 | Events | By Tri-County International Trucks
The International S13 Integrated Powertrain Mobile Training Tour began on April 2 and will visit Tri-County International Trucks on August 20. To date, the trailers have visited more than 48 dealer locations, trained more than 486 sales professionals, and educated more than 1,311 customers.
Doug Bradley on the Sales Enablement team was the key architect behind the S13 trailer tour with input and support from numerous stakeholders across Navistar. The preparation for the tour began in 2022 and encompassed:
- Designing and selecting a vendor to build the trailers.
- Selecting drivers and facilitators.
- Developing the learning content and training facilitators.
- Managing the logistics to visit more than 100 locations across North America.
During the customer portion of the ongoing training, a mix of fleet owners, state and municipal highway superintendents and technicians, dealers, and other customers are given the chance to explore the advanced powertrain and its components hands-on.
When walking through the training trailers, various components of the S13 engine, T14 transmission, and dual-stage aftertreatment system are highlighted so customers and dealer sales professionals could learn more about the intentional design of the powertrain. International subject matter experts and sales professionals are on-hand to provide interactive training exercises for dealer sales professionals and fleet end users. And the key part of it all is that at some locations customers had the chance to get behind the wheel and experience the powertrain’s performance first-hand.
Dealer Sales Professionals Weigh In
Since the start of the tour, Navistar’s Sales Enablement team has been collecting feedback from International dealer principals and sales professionals. Overall, dealers are very satisfied with the training, noting that the tour is a positive representation of both their dealerships and Navistar. They also indicated that the training equipped them with the information needed to inform customers about the benefits of the S13 Integrated Powertrain.
Pliler International, for instance, said: “We really enjoyed the training/trainers/trailer, etc. All the guys received great takeaways, gave them confidence to sell the product, and generated some excitement behind the new powertrain. Also, it proved to be extremely beneficial to showcase to the customers!”
A representative from Rechtien International Trucks said: "What I really like is the T14 transmission. It's going to crush competition product line, especially in the line-haul application."
Kyrish Truck Centers of Houston pointed out that they would have had more customers attend if they had a better understanding of how impactful the training was going to be. This is the “best training that Navistar has had in years,” according to Kyrish.
Waters Truck and Tractor in Columbus, Mississippi, provided some constructive feedback, calling for better planning, communication, and coordination among the trainers and back-office staff.
“There was some disconnect in communication between back-office staff and the dealership and the trainers. It worked out, but that could have been better,” Waters noted.
“I liked that it was hands-on training, that we weren't just watching a slideshow or a video,” Waters added. “I like how the instructors kept it entertaining and informative. The component breakdown was very helpful.”
Customers Tout Fuel Efficiency, Performance
During one stop at International dealer Arkel Motors in New Windsor, New York, current and potential customers in the area stopped by the dealership to explore the S13 Integrated training trailer and have their questions answered. Arkel Motors is an authorized, full-service International dealer located in the southeastern part of the state. The dealership carries the complete line of new International trucks, tractors, and chassis, as well as a full inventory of used trucks, full-service leasing, and rental trucks.
Keith Watts, a third-party consultant for Navistar, who helps facilitate training events like last summer’s S13 Bootcamp, and is one of four facilitators assigned to the S13 Training Trailer Tour, has ensured the training is consistent on both units going around North America. Keith explained that the point of this training is to educate the sales professionals on the components of the S13 engine, T14 transmission and dual-stage aftertreatment, and how these components contribute to superior operating economy, stellar performance, simplicity, and serviceability. This information helps sales professionals develop talking points based on their customers' “hot button” needs and enhance their credibility when talking to current and prospective customers.
“It’s about pulling off valve covers and explaining to people along the tour why we don’t have certain parts anymore,” Keith said. “They are seeing what we have simplified and why.”
“The S13 Integrated powertrain is new to this market, but not the world,” Keith added. “Truckers here know that Scania is synonymous with quality, and I am hearing them embrace this powertrain.”
One International customer who attended the Arkel Motors event is Dane Mannese. Dane owns Mannese Distribution in Milton, New York, and runs a fleet of International HX 520 Series trucks that haul general freight across five states in the Northeastern part of the U.S. Mannese’s less-than-truckload freight operations generally run about 85,000 lb. of loaded weight every day.
This summer, Dane ran the Arkel Motors rental LT equipped with the S13 Integrated Powertrain to compare with the fuel usage he sees in his current fleet powered by a competitor’s engines. He was immediately impressed by the early fuel savings he experienced with the S13 Integrated Powertrain.
“We run the same lanes and I see the report at the end of every day,” Dane said. “When my drivers leave, my computer tells me how many miles the truck had on it. And when they fill up, the computer tells me how many miles the truck has. I get immediate reports to my phone, and when I saw the S13 numbers, I texted my Arkel rental representative and said, ‘I think something’s wrong. This truck is getting 8.8 MPG today.’ Then, I ran it again the next day and it got 9 MPG.”
Dane added that a typical run to Allentown, Pennsylvania, from Milton, New York, takes 43 gallons of diesel for every truck in his fleet. With the S13 Integrated, the run took just 28 gallons.
When it comes to purchasing, however, although Dane said he is impressed with the fuel savings the S13 Integrated Powertrain delivers, he needs to make sure that savings will outweigh vehicle depreciation when it comes to resale value or any other potential loss that can occur on the backend.
“I’m curious about what International is offering for the S13 warranty,” Dane said. “My fleet doesn’t do all that much mileage, so we have been doing the Cummins six-year, 600,000-mile warranties. We have been selling the truck after about four years, with a little more than 200,000 miles on the warranty left for the resale. Someone is more apt to buy a four-year-old truck with 200,000 miles still covered than they are with a truck that’s got no miles covered.”
Although Dane had already tested the S13 Integrated Powertrain, he attended the mobile training tour at Arkel Motors to learn more about vocational offerings and warranties for the product.
Another potential customer, James Vananden, owner-operator of JVE Trucking, was also interested in spec’ing the S13 Integrated Powertrain for the HX Series. He hauls products like stone and topsoil via a 48-ft. drop-deck flatbed and needs the power the HX 520 offers. That said, James tested the rental LT to see what the S13 Integrated Powertrain was all about.
“I’ve been at this 37 years and I am set in my ways,” James said. “I have driven them all—name an engine. That truck right there [he pointed to the LT equipped with the S13 Integrated Powertrain]—it’s the engine and transmission combined—I have never driven anything in my life with an engine brake that good. Ever.”
CVSA's Brake Safety Week Scheduled for Aug. 25-31
June 11, 2024 | Safety | By Tri-County International Trucks
Brake Safety Week is a commercial motor vehicle and driver inspection and regulatory compliance enforcement initiative, a brake-safety awareness and outreach opportunity, and a brake-related inspection and violation data-collection project.
Inspection and Enforcement
CVSA-certified inspectors will conduct routine commercial motor vehicle inspections throughout the week, with a focus on brake systems and components. Any commercial motor vehicles found to have brake-related out-of-service violations will be removed from roadways until those violations are corrected.
For this year’s Brake Safety Week, inspectors will focus on the condition of brake linings and pads. Brake lining and pad issues may result in vehicle violations and could affect a motor carrier’s safety rating.
In addition, some jurisdictions have performance-based brake testers (PBBT) and will be using them during Brake Safety Week. A PBBT is a machine that assesses the braking performance of a vehicle.
Spring Into Summer Driving

This time of year presents its own set of challenges for professional and casual drivers alike, as the start of May brings the beginning of the deadliest driving season of the year (through September).
Our anticipation of early ETAs and easy miles can quickly be put in check by construction, breakdowns, and extreme weather. So, when you’re planning for the road ahead, it’s worth taking a moment to refresh your memory on tips, best practices, and safe strategies for driving and arriving with all your pieces in place.
It helps to be prepared—physically, mentally, and mechanically.
d = rt
Not to get all algebraic on you, but while distance may equal rate times time, the rate at which you travel and the time you take to do it can be affected by factors beyond your control—decreasing your rate and increasing the distance and time to reach your destination.
Map your route with a GPS-based travel app to give yourself an idea of the time it’ll take to get where you’re going and what delays you can expect along the way. Wherever there is construction and/or an accident you can see it plain as day and adjust your path in real time.
Even with the most meticulous planning, once you hit the road things can change quickly. Conditions can degrade from moment to moment and it’s always a great idea to anticipate and expect the unexpected to happen—the key to defensive driving.
Safety Is an Attitude
While traffic fatalities have been declining recently—the latest estimate for 2023 is more than 40,000—drivers are at risk more frequently, racking up a 2.1% increase in total miles driven.
And when you factor in more than 2 million life-altering injuries happening each year, it’s clear that any improvement in compliance, good habits and etiquette will have a profound effect on each of our lives.
No matter which mode of transportation you regularly use, please take a few minutes to brush up and read through the FMCSA’s tips for trucks and buses, passenger vehicles, as well as bicyclists and pedestrians.
As part of the overall Our Roads, Our Safety campaign, the FMCSA also offers valuable resourcees focusing on different elements of safe travel—speeding, distracted driving, work zones, seat belts, and health for drivers.
It’s Up to All of Us
Practicing road safety isn’t just a legal issue—it’s also a matter of respect and etiquette that is well worth being aware of because over the past decade, road rage related shooting incidents have surged over 400%!
Whether we are driving to make an on-time delivery or to have a great time at the beach—whatever the reason—we all deserve to arrive safely by being smart, taking care, and respectfully sharing the roads with each other.
Today, over the next few weeks, and throughout the year, we enthusiastically encourage you to read, print, post, and forward the valuable information in the links above—share it freely with your team, your teens, your partners, and your parents so that everyone arrives uneventfully!

Tri-County International Trucks Service Advisor Katheryn Mitchell Receives Navistar's March 2024 Service of Excellence Award
April 1, 2024 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
Katheryn started as a cashier at Tri-County International Trucks. She did so well with the customers at the front office that she was transitioned to service administrator, and recently was promoted to service advisor. She now handles all big accounts, along with Idealease of Detroit/Flint. She does all of the Cummins and International warranties and can look up parts for technicians.
Most of the large customers will only call Katheryn on her cell phone. They love the communication level she has with them, so much so that she has received Excellent Service in all the customer reviews. If we cannot get a part, she takes the initiative to contact their service departments to see if they can help expedite getting the truck repaired in a timely manner. She has stepped up as our top service advisor. Large fleet customers come to her for her knowledge of truck issues; she knows a lot about the trucks due to doing all of the warranties for Cummins and International. Customers only want to talk to her, and most of the trust is due to the continuous communication she has with the customers all day long. Katheryn takes care of most of the 360 documentation daily to keep her customers aware. She is willing to stay in constant contact with management via e-mail or face-to-face on all the situations that she has going on with the customers so that we stay in the loop.
She is a team player, she is willing to help anyone in the office, and she is willing to help when the afternoon service advisor takes a vacation. She helps the parts department as well as any of the techs who need her to look up warranties or parts if they are busy. Tri-County International Trucks is lucky to have Katheryn on the team.
CVSA’s International Roadcheck Is Scheduled for May 14-16
February 27, 2024 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
During the International Roadcheck, law enforcement personnel certified by CVSA will conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles and drivers at weigh/inspection stations, temporary sites, and through mobile patrols to ensure adherence to federal, state, provincial, or territorial regulations. The data collected over the 72-hour period of the International Roadcheck will be compiled, analyzed, and the results will be made available during the summer.
Each year, International Roadcheck highlights specific categories of violations. In 2024, the focus areas will be tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substance possession.
The issue of controlled substance and alcohol possession/use remains a significant concern for motor carriers, drivers, and the public at large. The increasing number of prohibited drivers listed in the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH) underscores the severity of this issue and poses a threat to all motorists traveling on North American roadways.
Throughout the three days of International Roadcheck, inspectors will conduct their routine North American Standard Level I Inspection, a comprehensive 37-step inspection procedure that covers vehicle components and driver documentation and requirements.

Time to Finalize Your Accident Documentation for 2023
January 23, 2024 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
Motor carriers operating CMVs over 10,000 lbs. MGVWR, transporting hazardous materials (HM) in placardable quantities, or transporting passengers are mandated to record accidents on a register by calendar year as defined in 49 CFR 390.51. Even if no accidents occurred, an accident register is required.
Firstly, let's establish the definition of an accident according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations: An occurrence involving a commercial motor vehicle (>10,000 lbs MGVWR, HM, or Passengers) operating on a highway in interstate or intrastate commerce that results in:
- A fatality;
- Bodily injury to a person requiring immediate medical treatment away from the scene.
- One or more motor vehicles incurring disabling damage, requiring towing away from the scene.
The term "accident" does not include:
- Boarding and alighting from a stationary motor vehicle.
- Loading or unloading of cargo.
When an accident occurs, it must be recorded on an accident register with the following information:
- Date of accident.
- City or town and State where the accident occurred.
- Driver Name.
- Number of injuries.
- Number of fatalities.
- Whether hazardous materials, other than fuel from the vehicle's tanks, were released.
Motor carriers must maintain the accident register for three years and also keep copies of required accident reports from State or other entities or insurers. The register is not sent to the FMCSA or State but is kept for review during compliance reviews or investigations.
As a best practice, motor carriers are recommended to maintain two accident registers by calendar year:
- DOT recordable accidents only.
- Non-DOT recordable accidents.
This practice helps provide the FMCSA with requested information during a compliance review. A second register with all accidents allows for proactive analysis and training to reduce frequency. Accident registers can be kept electronically, with a hard copy available for the FMCSA upon request.
To ensure register accuracy with the FMCSA, view recordable accidents on the FMCSA Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) Safety Measurement System (SMS) at FMCSA SMS.
For accidents involving the release of hazardous materials, carriers must complete a hazardous incident report (see 49 CFR 171.15 and 49 CFR 171.16). The accident registers can be kept in either paper or electronic format.
Winter Safety Tips for Drivers and Vehicles
Protecting Your Driver:
Cold weather poses risks of hypothermia and frostbite. To prevent hypothermia, take these precautions:
- Wear layers of warm, loose-fitting clothes, especially those that wick moisture.
- Use gloves and knit caps for heat retention.
- Change wet clothing promptly.
- Keep an emergency kit with a change of clothes, a blanket, hand warmers, and snacks.
- Consume hot, nutritious meals and stay hydrated.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages.
- Ensure communication for drivers in case of breakdowns in rural areas.
Prescription drugs may increase sensitivity to cold; consult with a healthcare professional.
Frostbite prevention:
- Shield skin from cold air and extreme temperatures.
- Recognize frostbite symptoms like skin color changes, numbness, and stiffness.
Protecting the Truck:
- Add diesel supplement to ultra-low sulfur diesel below 32°F.
- Plug in the engine block heater below 32°F; start unused trucks daily.
- Follow a startup procedure for optimal engine performance.
- Purge air tanks daily for trucks with air brakes.
- Apply brakes lightly in wintry conditions before parking to prevent freezing.
- Maintain full windshield washer solvent and clean windows.
- Remove ice-snow build-up from steps and grab handles.
- Use the 3-point method for entering/exiting the cab.
- Avoid parking in areas prone to snow accumulation, preventing roof collapse.
Handling Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in Cold Months:
The winter season brings unique challenges for equipment using diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Comprising a blend of technically pure urea and purified water, DEF freezes at 11 degrees Fahrenheit and -11 degrees Celsius. Proper maintenance and dispensing are essential to uphold its quality, according to the American Petroleum Institute. Similar to water, DEF expands by up to 7% when frozen, posing a risk of damage to the storage tank if it is at or near full capacity during freezing conditions. It is advisable to keep the DEF tank less than full in cold temperatures to mitigate potential issues.
Chains for Winter Operations:
If you are driving in a state that mandates carrying chains, ensure they are of the right size, securely fastened, clean, and free from damage for easy application when needed. If you're uncertain about your state's chain laws, visit:
Upcoming Changes to FMCSA
December 28, 2023 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
CDL Drivers in a “prohibited” status in the Clearinghouse will lose their commercial driving privileges.
The second Clearinghouse final rule (Clearinghouse-II) compliance date—November 18, 2024—is less than a year away. As part of these new Federal requirements, CDL drivers who have open violations in FMCSA’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse will soon lose their commercial driving privileges.
FMCSA added the following frequently asked questions on the Clearinghouse website to help CDL drivers understand the new regulations, and what actions they can take to retain or reinstate their commercial driving privileges, if needed.
How will the second Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse final rule (Clearinghouse-II) affect CDL drivers?
As established in the first Clearinghouse final rule (81 FR 87686), drivers with a “prohibited” Clearinghouse status are prohibited from operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). The second Clearinghouse final rule (Clearinghouse-II) further supports this by ensuring that drivers with a “prohibited” Clearinghouse status do not continue to hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or commercial learner’s permit (CLP).
The Clearinghouse-II final rule (86 FR 55718) requires that, beginning November 18, 2024, State Driver Licensing Agencies (SDLAs) must remove the commercial driving privileges from the driver's license of an individual subject to the CMV driving prohibition. This would result in a downgrade of the license until the driver completes the return-to-duty (RTD) process.
This means that, beginning November 18, 2024, having a “prohibited” Clearinghouse status will result in losing or being denied a CDL or CLP.
Note: SDLAs with legislative authority currently have the option to query the Clearinghouse and downgrade CDLs for prohibited drivers voluntarily and may do so before the November 18, 2024 compliance date.
How will the second Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse final rule (Clearinghouse-II) improve safety on our Nation’s roads?
The requirement to downgrade commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) of drivers in a “prohibited” Clearinghouse status rests on the safety-critical premise that drivers who cannot lawfully operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) because they engaged in prohibited use of drugs or alcohol or refused a drug or alcohol test should not hold a valid CDL or commercial learner’s permit (CLP). The Clearinghouse-II final rule (86 FR 55718) supports FMCSA’s goal of ensuring that only qualified drivers are eligible to receive and retain a CDL, thereby reducing the number and severity of CMV crashes.
My commercial driver’s license (CDL) was downgraded due to my “prohibited” Clearinghouse status. How can I get my commercial driving privileges reinstated?
To have your Clearinghouse status change from “prohibited” to “not prohibited,” you must complete the return-to-duty (RTD) process, as established by 49 CFR part 40, subpart O. After you complete the RTD process and your Clearinghouse status is updated to “not prohibited,” your State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA) will allow you to reinstate your commercial driving privileges.
FMCSA has created a resource that outlines the steps drivers take to complete their RTD process: download the Return-to-Duty Quick Reference Guide. For more information about the RTD process, visit the Clearinghouse Learning Center.

Proposed Phase 3 EPA Emissions Rules Will Have Significant Impact on Commercial Truck Industry
May 25, 2023 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
On May 25, Tri-County International was proud to host the U.S. EPA Region 5 (Great Lakes Region) along with the American Truck Dealers Association for a facility tour and informal discussion about how upcoming commercial truck emissions guidance may impact dealerships and end users of heavy duty vehicles. On the agenda was a facility tour and a discussion regarding how dealerships currently sell and service diesel powered vehicles, and further discussion about the training, change management, and infrastructure investments needed to sell and service zero emissions vehicles (ZEV) in the future.
The Tri-County leadership team was joined by ATD President Laura Perrotta, ATD Chairman Scott McCandless, and ATD NextGen Chairman Korey Neal to welcome the EPA contingent which made up the bulk of their standards and policy team.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed new emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks that would have a significant impact on the commercial truck industry. The new standards, which would take effect in 2027, would require trucks to reduce their emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) by 80% and 90%, respectively.
EPA Phase 1 GHG standards were implemented from 2014-2018. Phase 2 standards were started in 2021 and will be fully phased in by 2027. Phase 3 standard compliance will begin in 2027 and will be fully implemented in by 2032. The Phase 3 proposal is based on the
EPA’s analysis of the following:
- HD ZEV market
- Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
- Actions by states including the Multi-State Medium and HD MOU signed by 17 states, along with California’s Advanced Clean Trucks program which has been adopted by 8 additional states
The EPA is aware of the concerns of the commercial truck industry and through dealership and other visits, and is working with the industry to address these concerns. The EPA is committed to ensuring that the new emissions standards are fair and that they do not harm the competitiveness of the U.S. commercial truck industry. It is important to note that the proposed GHG Phase 3 standards are not a ZEV mandate, and that the proposed standards align with and support the commitments and investments from trucking fleets, vehicle manufacturers, and US states.
The EPA estimates that the new standards will reduce GHG emissions from heavy-duty trucks by 29% by 2045. This would be a significant step forward in the fight against climate change, as heavy-duty trucks are a major source of GHG emissions in the United States. The new standards are also expected to reduce smog-forming pollutants from heavy-duty trucks by 48% by 2045. This would improve air quality and reduce the risk of respiratory problems for people living near major highways.
The commercial truck industry is concerned about the cost of complying with the new standards. The EPA estimates that the cost of compliance could range from $1.5 billion to $3 billion per year. The industry is also concerned about the availability of technologies that can meet the new standards.
The commercial truck industry is a vital part of the U.S. economy. Trucks transport goods across the country, and they play a critical role in the supply chain. The industry employs millions of people, and it generates billions of dollars in revenue annually.
The EPA's proposed emissions standards are currently still in the rulemaking process. The public has until June 13, 2023 to comment on the proposed standards. The EPA is expected to finalize the standards in 2024. Click here to find out more about the proposed emissions standards and participate in the public comments.

Congratulations to Technician of Influence Winner Josh Wagner!
April 28, 2023 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
When you think of the future of the service department, you think of young talent with bright futures, and Josh is exactly that. He is quickly becoming one of the top-producing technicians at Tri-County International. His fearlessness to step out of his comfort zone and take on bigger jobs paired with his willingness to learn from more experienced techs gives us high hopes for him and his future with us. He has completed Navistar training and is working toward his Cummins certification.
We had a customer come in with a taillight out that he had received a ticket for, and the customer thought it was just a bulb that was out. We pulled Josh off a job to perform the quick fix, but Josh identified that not only did the customer need a bulb, but the wiring harness was falling under the truck and there was corrosion at the terminals. Josh came in and explained all this to the customer and that we would hate to see him go down the road and have the wiring get snagged on something and pull everything out. The customer approved the repairs and was appreciative of the time that Josh took to identify a potentially bigger problem. Josh takes pride in his work and goes above and beyond when it comes to customer uptime.
Josh comes to work every day with a positive attitude and eagerness to do his best. He is very thorough in his work, which is why we recently asked him to perform his first rebuild on an A26, and he did a great job. He has started doing some diagnostics and has been spot on. He is always willing to help fellow technicians when they need an extra hand or a customer who has a quick repair. Josh has been mentoring a young apprentice for several hours a week. Each month, Josh shows improvement in his productivity and proficiency. He is very thorough and takes great pride in having a very low comeback rate. He goes the extra mile to find solutions when parts are not available to maximize uptime for our customers. Josh is a huge asset to our team, and we have no doubt that with experience and knowledge, he will be a star for years to come.
Introducing the International S13 Integrated Powertrain
January 31, 2023 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
A clean sheet of paper and decades of experience. That’s what the engineering team started with when they began work on the International® S13 Integrated Powertrain.
UP TO A 15% BOOST IN EFFICIENCY.*
The S13 engine can operate at low RPMs with high torque, which equates to less fuel consumed while still delivering up to 515 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque. Thanks to a new dual stage aftertreatment system, the heavy (40-50 pounds), expensive (approx. $2,500) and finicky EGR cooler is no longer needed to reduce emissions. Its absence helps the S13 be the lightest 13-liter diesel engine providing maximum performance and efficiency.
*Compared to the 2017 International A26 engine in a 2017 International LT with aero package. Actual customer results may vary due to various factors, including but not limited to, truck specifications, weight of the vehicle, predictive features, environmental conditions, etc.
MAKING THE SHIFT.
The all-new T14 transmission was designed from the ground up to be a fully automated manual transmission. It’s a 14-speed overdrive transmission that is optimized to deliver peak fuel economy performance in direct drive (13th gear) during typical load.
The all-new, fully automated T14 is a 14-speed overdrive manual transmission that is optimized to deliver peak fuel economy performance in direct drive during typical load. Since it does not consume air during complicated maneuvers – like backing a trailer into a tight loading dock – there is no need to stop and let the air recharge. It also uses an oil-to-water coolant system to optimize temperature regulation in both hot and cold environments, which is one reason the T14 is able to achieve a gross combination weight (GCW) of up to 240,000 pounds.
NEXT-GEN AFTERTREATMENT.
Each component can focus on what it does best. Eliminating the EGR cooler is a prime example. Instead of trying to control NOx emissions inside the cylinder, the engine operates with zero EGR during regular operation so it can generate more power. Removing the EGR produces much less soot or particulate matter, allowing for extended service intervals and eliminating the need for active regens. The aftertreatment system provides a simple, reliable solution that is easily serviceable.
The International® S13 Integrated Powertrain was verified in some of the most challenging environments in North America. It also spent time inside a state-of-the-art facility that can
simulate 10 years of extreme temperature ranges that a truck may encounter out on the road.
THE S13 INTEGRATED POWERTRAIN IS EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLE IN THE LT AND RH SERIES INTERNATIONAL TRUCKS
The S13 is backed by an industry-leading two-year unlimited miles, unlimited hours warranty. Or choose additional assurance with available engine warranties that cover up to 7 years, 700,000 miles, and unlimited hours

Navistar Introduces New Global Integrated Powertrain That's Shifting What's Possible
Developed over five years in collaboration with TRATON GROUP, the International® S13 Integrated Powertrain is unveiled to the North American market
LAS VEGAS, Aug. 16, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Navistar continues its commitment to accelerate the impact of sustainable mobility with the introduction of the International® S13 Integrated Powertrain. Navistar unveiled the S13 Integrated Powertrain during an exclusive live event held for dealers, customers and industry press at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Developed over five years through global collaboration with the TRATON GROUP, the S13 Integrated Powertrain will provide superior operating economy, stellar performance, and simplicity and serviceability to the North American commercial vehicle market.
"The International S13 Integrated Powertrain sets an industry standard for efficiency, profitability and sustainability," said Mathias Carlbaum, chief executive officer. "Not only is it the most efficient powertrain we have ever produced, but it is also a major milestone in our journey to zero-emissions transportation."
The S13 Integrated Powertrain features a clean sheet design with the engine, transmission and aftertreatment developed and integrated concurrently, ensuring maximum efficiency without compromising performance. In comparison to the first-generation International® A26 engine specified with the 12-speed overdrive Eaton Endurant HD automated transmission, the S13 Integrated Powertrain is the lightest weight powertrain on the market. With the same comparison when specified with the updated International LT® Series aerodynamics package, the S13 Integrated offers up to a 15% gain in fuel efficiency. It also provides improved reliability and sustainability, marking a leap in the progress toward carbon neutral transport.
The S13 Integrated Powertrain was designed using a modular system approach. Modular systems allow for mass customization of broad variant offerings and ensure a long-term competitive advantage. This equates to faster time to market and lower production costs. The TRATON GROUP modular system enables efficient cross-brand development and production, while still allowing for regional adaptation and validation of the S13 Integrated Powertrain for the North American market. This is the first Group-wide demonstration of a modular solution.
"The S13 Integrated Powertrain is the catalyst for us to provide a simple, comprehensive ownership solution," said Göran Nyberg, executive vice president, Commercial Operations. "Our new optimized powertrain paired with a comprehensive ownership solution has a long-expected product life with excellent residual value, truly resetting the standard for total operating economy in our industry."
This comprehensive ownership solution includes dealer integrated software, built-in service products, repair maintenance contracts and other solutions available for International® vehicles equipped with the new S13 Integrated Powertrain, ultimately allowing fleets to concentrate on their core businesses.
The S13 Integrated Powertrain will be manufactured at Navistar's Huntsville Powertrain Manufacturing Plant in Huntsville, Ala. For more information and to access a live recording of the event to introduce the S13 Integrated Powertrain, visit www.internationaltrucks.com/shift.

2022 Truck Trends
March 22, 2022 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
2021 was transformative in a number of ways. It changed behaviors, spending patterns, administrations, and attitudes. It also showed the need to remain nimble. COVID has made sure of that. New trends are also rapidly changing our lives. Some spurred on by COVID, and some well underway before COVID. But all of it directly affects the trucking industry. As a backbone of the world economy, trucking is at the center of it all. As leading indicator, it’s not surprising that analysts closely monitor what’s happening in the trucking industry as they develop investment plans. Let’s take a closer look at some of the trucking trends the world is keeping an eye on.
ELECTRIFICATION
Electric trucks are coming. We all know that. The question is when? In a classic chicken or the egg scenario, no one is quite sure if the trucks will arrive before the charging infrastructure or if the infrastructure will come first. Commercial vehicle charging is different than passenger car charging. Commercial vehicles require faster charging rates due to much larger battery capacities and larger parking spaces to accommodate the vehicle. What is certain, as of today, regional trucking is a far better candidate for electrification. Trucks that leave from a central depot, trucks that can be charged overnight, trucks with frequent stop and go points in a route, and trucks that do not have the range requirements of an on-highway truck, are ideal. Trucks like the International eMV do not need to travel vast distances to make deliveries. Plus, electric trucks may be allowed to travel on streets or in locations where internal combustion engines are currently prohibited from going. In addition, they will likely not require the same amount of service and they certainly won’t have to worry about fluctuating gas prices.
In the end, businesses that build their own charging infrastructure will be one step ahead of the competition. The chicken-or-egg conundrum is irrelevant to them. They will be in charge of their own destiny and will be able to deploy an electric fleet from day one. To assist with the complex task of creating the infrastructure, consulting groups like NEXT eMobility Solutions from Navistar, work hand-in-hand with customers to develop a robust electrification strategy.
LIVE TRADE SHOWS
Trade shows are back! Kinda. We still don’t know what COVID is going to do, it’s likely that we’ll see a combination of both virtual and in-person conferences in 2022 and in some cases, hybrid events that mix virtual/in-person activities. Conferences that are mostly educational will likely remain virtual as people have become familiar with webinars, but for Trade Shows, there are many benefits to holding in-person shows for networking purposes.
There’s really no better way to launch a new product than at a show. That’s why International plans to be at several trade shows in the coming year. Potential customers may not be aware of the new or revised International products and services, plus, it offers an excellent change to speak directly with International Truck representatives.
In 2022, expect to see many presentations and product launches in the areas of electrification, autonomy and connectivity. These innovations will have a huge impact on the trucking industry and trade shows offer a unique opportunity to speak directly with those currently in the process of developing and perfecting them.
DRIVER SHORTAGES
TECHNOLOGY
Productivity technology has been growing within the trucking world for many years, providing valuable tools that can help manage government regulations, improve efficiencies and lower costs.
Products like OnCommand Connection deliver actionable intel on a wide range of data points. This powerful Advanced Remote Diagnostics tool can tell you what’s going on with each truck in your fleet, including fault code descriptions and severity ratings, likely needed parts and service, plus links to dealer parts availability with GPS mapping to nearby service centers.
Also coming on fast is autonomous vehicle technology. This is one trend that may develop within the trucking industry before the automotive industry - especially with on-highway vehicles. Almost every truck manufacturer is working on an autonomous platform and prototypes are already on the road. How this technology will be regulated is still unknown as we’re still in the very early stages of this trend.

Women's History (In Trucking) Month
May 11, 2021 | News | By Tri-County International Trucks
The Road is Long
March is Women’s History Month in the United States and to celebrate, Idealease is proud to share powerful data and facts, as well as spotlight just a few of the significant achievements which demonstrate how women have been an important part of our heavy-hauling industry—even before it was an industry.
Let’s start by taking a look at where we are today.
The Data of Women in Trucking
It’s well known that truck driving is the most commonly held job in the country, but according to the Promoting Women in Trucking Workforce Act introduced in the Senate in 2019, women are 47% of the total workforce in the U.S, but make up just 6.6% of drivers and only 12.5% of all trucking industry workers.
Bringing more women into commercial trucking is important for a number of big reasons.
It’s no secret that driving as a profession is male-dominated and it’s an issue more and more companies are currently working to improve, because making jobs accessible to women isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s smart business. Over the past few years, we’ve seen the driver shortage grow significantly and it now has the potential to reach a six-figure deficit by 2024—the industry needs a bigger pool of job prospects, yesterday and women are ready and able.
Secondly, women are equally talented truckers who are actually safer than their male counterparts—by a lot. Guys have a significantly higher chance of being convicted of reckless driving (88%), not using a seatbelt (78%), traffic signal violations (73%), and even speeding (70%) than the gals do. And, these numbers are achieved without controls, instrumentation, and seating specifically designed to accommodate women behind the wheel. They’re working at a disadvantage and succeeding regardless.
Finally, while women own less than 10% of all trucking companies, they boast a higher annual average revenue over male-owned firms by a 27.4% margin. That’s a significant, positive difference to any company’s bottom line. In the last decade, women’s roles in trucking sales, logistics, and senior management have all increased and these numbers indicate that’s very likely to have a positive effect on all fronts.
Capability, safety, and profitability—Women load it, bring it, and drop it off on schedule. And they have since the beginning.
Building the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s and 60s really started trucking as we know it, but way before semis and box trucks, there were carts and wagons hauling heavy loads (the oldest known wheel and axle dates to more than 5,000 years old). Cargo has been on the move for a very long time and women have always taken their place in the driver’s seat.
The History of Women in Trucking
When horsepower was a literal term and stagecoaches ran freight out West, Mary Fields grabbed the reins, paving the way for not only women drivers but for African-Americans as well. “Stagecoach Mary” was born into slavery and, at over 60 years-old, was the second woman hired by the U.S. Postal Service. She gained fame for her dependability over difficult terrain, and carrying a small arsenal wherever she went—and knowing how to use it.
In 1920, Luella Bates was the first woman to be issued a commercial driving license after spending two years working for the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company during World War I. She was promoted from making parts to full-time driver and gained fame during her three trans-continental tours of the States. Luella was a first-class spokesperson, driver, and an expert mechanic who demonstrated how women were equally capable.
More recently, Adriesue “Bitsy” Gomez founded the Coalition of Women Truck Drivers in the 1970s to help fight hiring discrimination and widespread sexual harassment. The organization pushed for inclusive recruitment campaigns and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines. Bitsy’s legacy is carried on today by organizations like Women in Trucking, WTS, and REAL Women in Trucking.
For more history and background on Luella, Bitsy, and other trailblazing women in trucking, here’s an excellent article to read.
From Everyone at Idealease…
Happy Women’s History month to all the amazing women who love, support, and dedicate themselves to our industry. Whether you’re at Idealease corporate, at an Idealease location, or rolling down the road—thank you for all you do!

International® Truck Adds Enhanced Driver Safety Capabilities
December 15, 2020 | Navistar | By Tri-County International Trucks
“Our DriverFirst™ philosophy drives us to continually improve product features that matter most to our customers, and safety is always a significant concern,” said Charles Chilton, vice president of Navistar’s Product Strategy and Planning function. “With our shared commitment to the driver, vehicle and highway safety, we’re proud to advance the safety features available on our products in collaboration with Bendix. By putting drivers in trucks equipped with safety aids, we are all contributing to a safer transportation network, from which everyone will benefit.”
Enhanced Fusion Offered as Standard on International® LT® Series, RH™ Series
Upgrading from the earlier generation of Fusion as standard equipment on the International LT® Series and RH™ Series, the enhanced Fusion system delivers:
- Enhanced collision mitigation and stationary vehicle braking;
- Multilane automatic emergency braking;
- Highway departure braking; and
- Enhanced Adaptive Cruise Control.
The enhanced Wingman Fusion system now has the capacity to apply increased braking power on the tractor and trailer when compared to the original Fusion system. It also retains the capabilities of the system’s earlier versions, such as stationary object alerts, overspeed alerts and intervention, lane departure warning, and prioritized alerts to help reduce driver distraction.
Further advancing available driver safety options on its heavy-duty lineup, International has also added the updated optional Bendix® BlindSpotter® Side Object Detection System features for the LT® Series and RH™ Series. International has enhanced the optional Blindspotter system through improved integration with the vehicle’s controller area network. With this new integration, the updated BlindSpotter system provides a wider, 150-degree range of coverage, which is capable of detecting objects up to 20 feet in front of and 20 feet behind the BlindSpotter radar. The coverage zone extends up to 10 feet to the right of the vehicle.
By operating in two modes – highway speeds and lower speeds – the updated Blindspotter system has an increased ability to filter stationary objects like guardrails at highway speeds, and narrows the range for alerts without filtering stationary objects or infrastructure at speeds less than 20 mph. The updated BlindSpotter system maintains the look, size, position and mounting hardware of its radar and in-cab display units.
Additional Driver-Friendly Options Available on International® LT®, RH™ Series
Building on these safety benefits are two new systems offered as optional on both the International® LT® and International® RH™ Series: Bendix® Wingman® Fusion™ with ACB (Active Cruise with Braking) Stop and Driver Go, and Lane Keep Assist.
International now becomes the only OEM to offer Bendix Wingman Fusion with ACB Stop and Driver Go. This system includes the benefits of Wingman Fusion with enhanced features, and ACB Stop and Driver Go which allows for Adaptive Cruise Control to remain active down to low vehicle speeds, including full stop. Once at stop, if the driver applies throttle and reaches 7 miles per hour, the system can re-accelerate the vehicle to the cruise control set speed, provided there is no object detected ahead.
“ACB Stop and Driver Go is a driver-satisfying feature in heavy stop-and-go traffic, while the Comfort Braking that is another enhancement of the system provides smoother application of the foundation brakes,” Chilton said.
Another optional system being offered on the International® LT® and International® RH™ Series is Lane Keep Assist, which supports the driver with assisted steering torque to remain within the lane of travel when a pending unintended lane departure is recognized. The system’s active steering functionality dynamically adjusts steering effort based on vehicle speed, allowing lighter steering at low speeds to aid in maneuvering in parking lot situations, and heaver/firmer steering at higher speed to aid in control of the vehicle. The system – built on an existing Sheppard® steering gear that is already standard on many Navistar® vehicles - also includes compensation to counter cross winds or road crowning, steering wheel return-to-center assist, and active damping to reduce steering wheel oscillations and improve feel. Hanover, Pennsylvania-based R.H. Sheppard Co. Inc. was acquired by Bendix in June 2020.
Navistar and Bendix agree that their safety technologies complement safe driving practices and are not intended to enable or encourage inattentive or aggressive driving. No commercial vehicle safety technology replaces a skilled, alert driver exercising safe driving techniques and proactive, comprehensive driver training. Responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains with the driver at all times.

All these data-driven solutions are included as standard for five years on new International® LT® Series, International® RH™ Series and International® LoneStar® models. Depending on the application, it's estimated that fleets can save over $12,000 per vehicle over those five years.
"With Intelligent Fleet Care, we are delivering what our fleet customers have told us they are looking for," said Chintan Sopariwala, vice president, Aftersales Operation & Connected Vehicle, Navistar. "They want actionable insights into the health status of their fleet and what needs to be done to keep it up. They want a faster, more efficient service and repair process. And along with this, they want predictive diagnostics and other solutions that enable them to optimize the fleet's performance. With Intelligent Fleet Care, they will now command all these benefits in one comprehensive package."

"Intelligent Fleet Care delivers proactive and predictive tools that helps customers do this. It makes things visible, easy to understand and actionable."
Ciesielski cited four key differences in International's approach to connected technology and remote diagnostics that are reflected in International® Intelligent Fleet Care, including:

International Truck Launches The New International® HX® Series
November 17, 2020 | Trucks | By Tri-County International Trucks
LISLE, Ill., Nov. 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, International Truck launched the new International® HX® Series, the next-generation of its HX Series vehicles. The new HX Series is the first product released under the company's Navistar 4.0 strategy and its Project Compass initiative – which focuses on flexible, modular design to meet customer needs, streamline the customer experience and deliver the very best support and service in the industry.
"The new HX Series represents our most comfortable, durable, technologically integrated and driver-focused Severe Service truck ever," said Mark Stasell, vice president, Vocational Truck, Navistar. "It is the physical representation of our Navistar 4.0 strategy – putting the customer at the center of everything we do."
The new HX Series is available in both a set-forward axle HX520 and a set-back axle HX620. Both vehicles are now available for order and deliveries will start early next year.
Extreme Duty Cab
The new HX Series features a redesigned cab that is designed and validated to perform in even the most punishing vocational applications. It comes with a durable three-piece hood that is crack-resistant, strong and specifically engineered to offer outstanding front-forward visibility. Backed by rigorous testing, the extreme duty cab is structurally reinforced in key locations to ensure long life and is now protected by ChemGuard, LineX and International Truck's own topcoat process making it nearly impenetrable to salt – all done with an intelligent design of high-strength steel, resulting in no weight penalty. Demonstrating the corrosion resistance of the cab, the new HX Series is backed by the confidence of a 10-year perforation warranty.
The new HX Series also comes with functional dual external air cleaners, offering increased filtration which is critical when running in dusty environments. All marker lights have been replaced with LEDs which provide superior nighttime visibility and safety while reducing the frequency of repair. To add your own personal touch, the new HX Series is easily customizable with optional stainless-steel visors, bright finish mirrors and additional stainless-steel options.
Inside, the focus was on the driver. The new extreme duty cab improves driver safety, comfort and productivity. To start, the overall cab size has been increased. With a focus on comfort, the cab now features best-in-class HVAC and larger power windows, creating a view with improved visibility.
The expanded cab also comes laid out with International Truck's newest and highest trim package Diamond Elite. Included in this package is a new line of premium heated and ventilated seats offering complete comfort at all times and allowing drivers to stay focused and effective. Integrated driver assist technology from Bendix also helps improve driver's awareness and safety.
"The cab interior is the driver's command center, so every inch needs to be attuned to their needs," said Stasell. "Designed directly from driver feedback, the new HX Series is built to be the most driver-oriented vehicle in your fleet."
Improved Performance
On a job site, maneuverability is paramount. For improved performance, the new HX Series is available with dual steering gears and advanced anti-lock braking systems that result in superior turning, traction and control. To help maximize your delivered payload, the HX620 also comes standard with the International® A26 engine, delivering up to 500 horsepower for top tier performance in a lightweight package.
The HX Series continues to offer an industry-leading, high strength 12.5" x 0.5" single rail frame option delivering 3.5M RBM, meaning it is capable of withstanding even the heaviest loads.
To further enhance performance, International Truck also includes a Huck-bolted frame and cross members on the chassis that minimize movement and wear, a wide range of factory-installed lift axles, and for the rare occasions a driver does get stuck, a front tow pin option rated up to 150,000 lbs.
Proven Partners
The new HX Series features proven component technology from key partners. Both the HX520 and HX620 models can be ordered with the Cummins® X15 engine, delivering the power to perform in a variety of ratings up to 605hp and 2,050 lb-ft of torque.
It also features the new Hendrickson HAULMAAX® HMX-EX Suspension, bringing improved reliability and increased job site ratings.
A wide range of steerable lift axles are also offered for the new HX Series. All lift axle combinations are available from the factory; most notably, International Truck now offers the option for all controls to be placed in the wing panel of the dashboard for improved ergonomics and quality appearance.
With a comprehensive offering of manual, automated manuals and automatic transmissions for any application, the new HX Series features the Eaton Fuller manual transmissions, Eaton Ultrashift® automated manual transmissions or the Allison 4000 Series Transmissions. The automated manual and automatic transmissions are controlled through International Truck's intuitive, driver-friendly stalk shifter control that allow the driver to keep their eyes on the job.
A Truly Connected Truck
To maximize uptime, International Truck has integrated the Diamond Logic® electrical system into the new HX Series. Diamond Logic offers fleets an integrated, easily programmable and customizable electrical system that operates directly from the dash. It decreases body installation labor, increases uptime and safety and allows drivers to operate the truck's body with unmatched confidence.
The new HX Series is supported through OnCommand® Connection – the company's real-time remote diagnostics system, offering the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of connected vehicle services. All HX Series customers will have visibility into the health of their fleet, making it easier to manage maintenance and repair. This technology allows International Truck and its service network to predict parts needs, so dealers have inventory on shelves where and when you need it.
The new HX Series is also backed by International® 360 – the service communications and fleet management platform that makes it easier than ever to seamlessly communicate with the International service network for fleets of all makes.
"Navistar 4.0 and Project Compass are focused on putting the customer at the center of everything that we do, and that customer focus is crystal clear in our brand new HX Series," said Friedrich Baumann, president, Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. "I can truly say without hesitation that the new HX Series is built entirely around our customers, designed to help them reach new levels of success."

Navistar Launches Service Allies Initiative with Dealer Network
November 11, 2020 | Navistar | By Tri-County International Trucks
“Veterans returning to the civilian workforce are well trained and highly experienced, and typically have many personal qualities our dealers are looking for, including drive, responsibility and the ability to get the job done,” said Joe Kory, Navistar senior vice president, Aftersales. “We believe this new initiative will provide a service to both these veterans and the dealers who are seeking qualified candidates.”
LISLE, Ill. (November 11, 2020) – Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV), a producer of International® brand commercial trucks, proprietary diesel engines, and IC Bus® brand school and commercial buses, has launched the Service Allies Initiative, which will connect military veterans with career opportunities at International® Truck and IC Bus® dealers.
The initiative has the dual purpose of helping qualified military veterans who are seeking work in the civilian sector, and of combating the trucking industry’s chronic shortage of qualified service technicians and other highly trained professionals.
Navistar’s Service Allies Initiative will be managed by the VetFirst Solutions Group, a leadership consulting and training firm that has strong qualifications for providing excellent connections between military veterans and the company’s dealer networks.
VetFirst has partnered with professional military associations and military bases to connect military veterans with International Truck and IC Bus dealers nationwide. The firm has also leveraged existing relationships with relevant organizations, including SFL-TAP (Soldier-for-Life – Transition Assistance Program), Base TSM (Transition Service Managers), the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce “Hiring Our Heroes” program to provide the connections needed.
The initiative is well positioned to offer multiple types of opportunities to qualified veterans, including:
- Military Credit Program: This International® Truck accepted / approved service training and credit curriculum offers credit for certain levels of International Truck-required technician training given to military mechanics utilizing existing curriculum from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps.
- Internships: Implementing veteran internships with military installations and International® Truck dealerships around the country allows service managers to start job shadowing up to 180 days from transition date at International® Truck dealerships, at no payroll cost to dealers for the internship. The program will coordinate with International Truck and the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program for internship approval and documentation.
- Direct Placement: Some veterans may already be fully qualified service technicians, in which case the program may be able to place them directly with International® Truck and IC Bus® dealers, reducing training expense and increasing customer Uptime.
“We are excited by the opportunity to partner with our dealers to facilitate opportunities for the many highly qualified military veterans who are seeking jobs in the U.S.,” Kory said. “The trucking business is among the most military-friendly industries, and our dealers will welcome the chance to hire experienced technicians, while having the satisfaction of supporting veterans who have served their country by offering them a career.”

Navistar Launches Dealer-Aligned Equipment Donation Program to Further Enrich Technician Training
June 8, 2020 | Navistar | By Tri-County International Trucks
Lisle, Ill. (June 8, 2020) – Combating the trucking industry’s growing technician shortage, Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV) and its International® dealer network have launched a new integrated program to supply accredited technical schools with training equipment and real-world advisory counsel.
Navistar has a long history of donating International® trucks, engines and other equipment to technical schools nationwide. The new program builds on this foundation by engaging the company’s vast dealer network to donate vehicles, serve on school advisory committees that assist in curriculum development, and provide students with career opportunities.
“This new approach is aimed at combating the growing technician shortage by combining vehicle donations with the powerful insights of our dealer personnel,” said Ana Salcido, manager, Technician Recruitment, Navistar. “Our dealer network will grow their relationships with technical schools, enabling students to learn rapidly on pertinent equipment while also discovering a rewarding and lucrative career.”
Recent donations by International dealers include:
- An International® ProStar® to Western Technical College in La Crosse, Wisc., by DeBauche Truck & Diesel;
- An International® WorkStar® to Mid-State Technical College, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc., by Mid-State Truck Service, Inc.;
- And an International® ProStar+® 113 to Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wisc., by Mid-State Truck Service, Inc.
“Among our six Wisconsin-based locations, we actively participate in three local technical training programs and many high school shop courses,” said Scott Hoffman, director of service, Mid-State Truck Service, Inc. “Sustaining students’ career interest in becoming heavy-duty technicians is essential to our industry. We feel it’s our responsibility to help attract applicants to the field and provide them with proper technical training, relevant equipment and career opportunities.”
Ryan Kawski, dean of Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering and Transportation, Agriculture, Natural Resources & Construction at Mid-State Technical College, echoed the importance of a strong dealer relationship.
“Mid-State Truck Service has been a long-time member of the advisory committee for our Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technician programs,” Kawski said. “Their involvement ensures we’re properly preparing our students to best serve their future employer and, ultimately, the end customer.”
“Donations of late-model equipment keep our program relevant and competitive,” Kawski continued. “For example, the International WorkStar we received from Mid-State Truck Service has an automatic transmission and pneumatic disc brakes. Receiving this kind of costly equipment as a donation frees up funds for other needed program-related expenses.”
The demand for quality heavy-duty technicians is growing, and the supply of new entrants to the field has failed to meet current industry needs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians is projected to grow 4 percent from 2018 to 2028. In order to backfill for technicians who are reaching retirement age or leaving the industry, the TechForce Foundation estimates the need to fill more than 25,000 replacement positions annually from 2020 through 2022.
“Navistar and our dealer network are fully committed to customer uptime and having skilled technicians in the service department is a key component of that uptime promise,” said Salcido. “We’re thankful to be able to contribute to educational programs across the country that provide students with skills and certifications to achieve a meaningful and sought-after career.”

Fleetrite® Parts Introduces New Line of Filters
Now in its 50th year of business, Fleetrite® parts, Navistar’s all-makes aftermarket truck and bus parts brand, introduces a new line of filters. Fleetrite filters are a direct replacement for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) filters and include air, hydraulic, fuel, lube and oil, DEF and water and coolant. Warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship, Fleetrite filters prevent contaminants, dirt and debris from entering systems while reducing maintenance costs. This new product line enhances the Fleetrite brand’s more than 100 current product lines.
“The introduction of filters into our Fleetrite product offering expands our portfolio to cover one of the largest all-makes, maintenance product lines in the heavy-duty industry and allows us to reach new customer segments,” said Josef Kory, senior vice president, Parts, Navistar. “Now more than ever, our customers are looking to lower their total cost of ownership without sacrificing uptime. The Fleetrite filter line provides us with the opportunity to do so, while rounding out our filtration product offering.”
Fleetrite Expands Retail Footprint
Parts are now more accessible with the addition of standalone Fleetrite retail locations to International® Truck and IC Bus® dealer locations. There are currently eight Fleetrite stores open with plans to develop 10 stores in 2020. The goal is to reach 50 locations by 2023. Navistar collaborates with its International Truck dealer network to determine the most ideal locations for new stores.
Kory adds, “Fleetrite stores were designed to support our customers and their businesses by bringing quality parts closer to our customer, offering multiple daily deliveries and stocking parts that fit all makes and models.”
Navistar Launches Parts Online Ordering Solution
With a steadfast focus on customer service, ease-of-doing business and parts availability, Navistar’s Parts business launches a new online parts ordering option powered by RepairLink. Navistar is the first commercial OEM to leverage this popular parts ordering platform widely used by the automotive industry. RepairLink is an online connection to order parts from the International Truck and IC Bus dealer network. With Navistar’s entire parts catalogue available for purchase, more than 3,500 customers have made upward of 30,000 transactions using RepairLink.
“RepairLink offers a solution to fleets of all sizes to order and manage parts, which will in turn help our dealers engage with customers through comprehensive online interactions,” said Kory. “We’re working quickly to continue to evolve ways in which we connect with and serve our customers. Ultimately, we want to cover all of our customers’ aftermarket needs through a simple digital experience.”
